Principle 04
Shadow must be integrated.
What you refuse to own in yourself does not vanish — it acts through you, and on you, from the dark.
Every self-image casts a shadow: the anger of the peacemaker, the neediness of the self-sufficient, the ambition of the humble. These exiled parts remain alive and influential, leaking out as projection, moodiness, sabotage, or sudden collapses of character that 'came out of nowhere'.
Integration means turning toward what was exiled — not to obey it, but to hear it and include it. An integrated person is not someone without darkness; it is someone whose darkness is known, and therefore no longer in charge. Much of what we call charisma or depth in a person is simply integrated shadow.
In practice
- Treat intense judgments of others as clues to your own disowned material.
- Ask what a 'negative' trait might be protecting or providing.
- Reclaim golden shadow: admiration often marks your own unlived capacity.
What quality do I condemn most in others — and where does it live in me?
